Now that is an offer you cannot refuse, particularly as it comes from a reliable scientific source; A survey that followed more than 1,700 men and women through middle age into old age found that those who took up healthy living habits, such as adequate exercise, enjoyed five years’ more active life free from disabilities before they died.

The survey started at an average age of forty-three years and continued for thirty years. The researchers found that those who in middle age exercised vigorously for four hours a week, did not smoke and remained slender (fewer than 152 pounds for a man at a height of 5 feet and 9 inches; fewer than 131 pounds for a woman at a height of 5 feet 4 inches) were 50 per cent more likely to live into their seventies than sedentary overweight smokers.

Hardly surprising, you may say, but what is notable is that those who had the healthy lifestyle habits did not develop minor disabilities such as difficulty with walking, stretching or mobility in general until they were seventy-four. This is compared with the start of disabilities for others in the trial as young as forty-nine!

So, however old you are, even if you have had bad health habits up to now, if you change them you can still reap benefits in the future.
